March 9th, 2009 Roger Norbeck, Bella Vista, Arkansas, joined the Foundation as a member of the Board of Directors March 2, 2010 The City Council of Grove, OK approved a Memorandum of Understanding partnering with the Foundation to prepare a Watershed Improvement Plan for the Grove community.
January 14th, 2010: Founation meets with Oklahoma Congressman Dan Boren about strategic issues facing the Grand Lake Watershed and the need for a four-state collective effort to reduce risks to water quality.
December 13, 2009: Kansas Water Office has received $863,000 from EPA Region 7, Kansas City, for the purpose of completing a stream erosion project on about a 8.3 mile reach on the Neosho River. Kansas is contributing $300,000 for this $1.3 million project.

Arkansas

Arkansas is home to the Little Sugar Creek Watershed which has about 138 square miles located in northwest Arkansas. The northwest tip of Arkansas is also home to a portion of the Honey Creek Watershed which flows directly into the Grand Lake O’ The Cherokees east of Grove, Oklahoma.

LITTLE SUGAR CREEK WATERSHED:

Little Sugar Creek begins near Bentonville, Arkansas. It flows north thru Bella Vista and crosses into Missouri. In Missouri the Little Sugar and the Big Sugar Creek join near Havenburst to form the Elk River.

The Population of the Arkansas portion of the Little Sugar Creek watershed is about 54,000 (2,000 Census). The makeup of the Little Sugar Creek watershed is about: 55% forest, Grassland 30%, Suburban 5%, Transitional 4%, Urban 3%, and Water .06 %.

Communities within the watershed include: Bentonville, Pea Ridge ,Bella Vista, Sulphur Springs, Gravette, Avoca, Litle Flock City, Centerton, Garfield, and the north portion of Rodgers, Arkansas.

HONEY CREEK WATERSHED

The headwaters of Honey Creek begin just east of the south side of Gravette, Arkansas.
Maysville is in the Honey Creek watershed. A targeting study of the Grand Lake O’ The Cherokees area shows that the Arkansas portion of the watershed has the greatest potential for phosphorous reduction in the Honey Creek arm of the Grand Lake and among the top 20% of the lake region.

The majority of the Arkansas portion of the Grand Lake Watershed is within the Elk River Watershed Improvement Association (ERWIA). This citizen-based non-profit organization is located in Pineville, Missouri and can be contacted at: Elk River Watershed Improvement Association, P.O. Box 6, Pineville, Missouri 64856.
